For as long as she can remember, Martha has always been around dogs. As a baby, she was fascinated by her family’s Dachshunds, and during her teenage years, she fell head-over-heels for their English Springer Spaniel, Brodie. For the past 20 years, she has loved and cared for three Springer Spaniels from puppyhood to their geriatric years while also volunteering with English Springer Rescue America for more than a decade.

Martha has had several careers in the U.S., France, and Switzerland. She completed her Ph.D. in French and Francophone studies and taught French language, literature, film, and culture to undergraduate and high school students, as well as older adults – all while helping raise her two stepchildren. She recently moved back to the Chapel Hill area after living in the Upper Valley of Vermont and New Hampshire for four years where she taught French, learned the art of stacking wood, and discovered the beauty of the Green Mountains.

When not caring for pets, Martha enjoys walking in the forest, cooking with her Dutch husband, reading French or American novels, watching foreign films, and doting on her 11-year-old Springer Spaniel, Miles.
