10 Ways Your Pet Can Benefit from Acupuncture
Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese medical practice that can be used to treat a variety of health problems, both physical and mental, and it can help improve your emotional well-being. Many people have experienced first-hand the benefits of acupuncture – relief from chronic pain, depression, anxiety, headaches, allergies, digestive problems, and more.
This spring, we’ll be featuring a series of posts by Dr. Ruth West, a Certified Veterinary Acupuncturist and owner of Karma K9 Mobile Acupuncture. These posts will help you understand what acupuncture is and how it may be able to help your pet.
This week, Dr. West outlines 10 common health issues that may be treatable with acupuncture.
Acupuncture and Your Pet
Did you know that our furry friends can benefit from acupuncture just like us?
It’s true! Science has shown that acupuncture can help relieve pain, aid with healing and increase the quality of life for our faithful companions. Acupuncture can be combined safely with conventional veterinary treatments, or used alone to support balanced health and prevent disease.
10 Health Problems Acupuncture Can Treat
- Osteoarthritis: Studies show that up to 60% of dogs and cats suffer from arthritis. It can occur in pets less than 3 years of age!
- Hip/elbow/shoulder dysplasia: This painful condition can lead to arthritis.
- Tendon and Ligament issues, which occur in pets just like they do in people
- IVDD (Intravertebral disc disease) and other spinal issues
- Laryngeal paralysis, which causes voice changes, difficulty eating, and difficulty breathing
- Neurological problems and paralysis
- Sports and performance injuries (that’s right, just like people have!)
- Geriatric issues: “Old dog” issue, such as incontinence, dementia, and depression
- Anxiety: A common issue with people and pets alike.
- Systemic disease: Used with conventional veterinary treatment, acupuncture can be used to help treat diabetes, Cushing’s disease, kidney and liver issues, allergies, skin problems, and obesity.
Ask your veterinarian if acupuncture can help your pet with any of these or similar issues!
